Mentoring

Mentoring students, aspiring researchers, and assistant professors is a responsibility I take very seriously. I have dedicated significant time and energy to guiding each of my mentees, knowing how difficult the journey can be. Every time someone reaches out for advice, I reflect on the many people who have helped me along the way—especially my advisors, Aimee Chin and Chris Barrett—and I do my best to pay that generosity forward.

Many of the students I mentor are my research assistants or junior co-authors, often aspiring to gain admission to top Ph.D. programs. My motivation to help them realize their potential stems from my own struggles. I want to ensure that my mentees do not face the same obstacles I did.

One of the most important lessons I emphasize is that failure is not the end—it is a learning experience. I encourage them to embrace setbacks as stepping stones for growth while always prioritizing their mental health and happiness over any research project.

In 2020, I co-founded the Association for Mentoring and Inclusion in Economics (AMIE) with Priya Mukherjee. Our vision was to identify and address group-based disparities and challenges faced by junior scholars in the economics profession. Since its inception, AMIE has made significant strides in fostering a more inclusive academic environment. Over the past few years, our initiatives have supported more than 400 Ph.D. students globally, providing mentorship, resources, and guidance to help them navigate their academic careers. This impact underscores AMIE’s growing influence in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the field of economics.
