Mentoring

I take mentoring students, aspiring researchers, and assistant professors very seriously and have put in a lot of time and energy to help each one of them. It is an extremely difficult task, but every time someone reaches out to me, I think of everyone who has helped me reach where I am, and most importantly, my advisors Aimee Chin and Chris Barrett, and do the best I can to help.

A large number of students I have mentored are either my research assistants or junior co-authors who typically want to get admitted to a good Ph.D. program. The inspiration to help them realize their true potential comes from my failures. I do not want my mentees to go through the same struggles as I did.

An important lesson I want my mentees to learn is “it is ok to fail, but important to learn from mistakes” and “your mental health and happiness is more important than research project”.

The desire to be a good mentor is not possible without sincere help from like-minded individuals. I am lucky to know and get help from several friends and co-authors, who are outstanding mentors and most importantly kind human beings. They are:

I am proud to be part of a select group of mentors at the Research in Color Foundation. The Research In Color (RIC) Foundation is an incorporated nonprofit organization that is dedicated to increasing the number of Ph.D. students of color in economics and economics-based disciplines and amplifying meaningful economic and policy research on communities of color. RIC does this by matching minorities looking to pursue doctoral degrees in these fields with seasoned professionals who will serve as mentors. Besides identifying research ideas, and exploring additional needs before embarking on a Ph.D. program, each mentor-mentee pair will have a chance to work together on a short 6-month long independent research project.
